2020 Scholarship Recipient Spotlight: Kelly Baker

Posted by Amy Vaughn on Mon, Aug 10, 2020

The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Kelly Baker, a 2020 recipient of one of the nine Glen and Alice Beers Scholarship awards.

Baker, KellyKelly, the daughter of Mark and Jenny Baker, is a 2015 graduate of Galion High School. She will be entering her third year of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine this fall.

What is your favorite aspect of college life?

“My favorite aspect of college life was gaining independence and more responsibilities. College is a great place to discover who you are and learn about ‘the real world’ outside of high school.”

Would you say most of your learning comes from inside or outside of the classroom?

“Every day I get the opportunity to learn from amazing doctors that are experts in their fields, so I would say the majority of my learning as a graduate student has been inside the classroom. However, as an undergraduate a lot of life lessons were taught outside of the classroom.”

What new interest or courses of study have you discovered at college?

“During my past two years of veterinary school, I’ve discovered a few facets of veterinary medicine that interest me: emergency medicine and internal medicine.”

In what ways has the college experience changed/improved you?

“My time in college allowed me to realize how important my family is in my life. I found a deeper appreciation for all of their support throughout the years, and I hope to stay nearby after graduating!”

What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?

“Take advantage of the many opportunities that come your way – load up your class schedule with electives that peak your interest, ask for help if you need it, and have fun!”

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Kelly!
