Posted by Amy Vaughn on Fri, Aug 14, 2020

Smith, ThomasThe Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Thomas Smith, III, a 2020 recipient of one of the seventeen Doug and Renee Leuthold Scholarship awards and one of the eighteen Margaret and Donald Wenner, MD Scholarship awards.

Thomas, the son of Tom and Valerie Smith, is a 2015 graduate of Wynford High School. He will be entering his second year of a master’s degree in mathematics at Bowling Green State University this fall.

What is your favorite aspect of college life?

“My favorite aspect of college is the community because it is not one thing - it is many backgrounds coming together to support each other.”

Would you say most of your learning comes from inside or outside of the classroom?

“Most learning is done outside the classroom. The class is good for a day’s worth of material, but you need to go over that material yourself.”

What new interest or courses of study have you discovered at college?

“I discovered how much I enjoy helping others with subject material, which prompted me to continue my studies.”

In what ways has the college experience changed/improved you?

“I think it has made me a better person. In high school, sports do a decent job at this with sportsmanship; but in a small public school, one bad apple can have a much bigger influence than you would expect.”

What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?

“Look out for each other.”

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Thomas!
