Rotary Club of Bucyrus & BACF Secure Funds for Bucyrus K 9 UnitWhat began with the simple question of “What can we do help?” from a wife to her husband has resulted in the completion of a major fundraising initiative in Bucyrus. After hearing a presentation from Bucyrus Police Chief Ken Teets about the department’s K-9 unit during a Bucyrus Rotary meeting in February, Fred and Jackie Hendricks decided they needed to do something to help the Bucyrus Police Department secure the funds for Amigo’s replacement.

“We began brainstorming and presented the idea to the Rotary board,” Fred said. “They bought into our idea and told us to run with it.”  A fundraising committee was formed consisting of the following individuals:  Fred and Jackie Hendricks; Tim and Connie Musselman; Dan Price; and Andy Schoch.

Running with the idea is an understatement, considering the couple who headed up the K-9 Unit Fundraising Committee was able to help the Rotary secure donations totaling $7,500 in just three months. The $7,500, along with a matching grant from the Bucyrus Area Community Foundation of $7,500, ensures the Bucyrus Police Department will be able to fund the replacement for Amigo when it’s time for him to retire.

“To date, the Fundraising Committee has been able to help the Rotary raise $8,666, bringing the total raised for the Bucyrus Police Department K-9 Unit to $16,166,” Janet Pry, BACF Executive Director said.

“The additional funds raised beyond the initial $7,500 needed to match the grant from the BACF will remain in a separate fund with the BACF specifically designated for the Bucyrus Police Department K-9 Unit.”

The designated fund will allow the Bucyrus Police Department to plan accordingly for the future of the K-9 Unit.

“Having the K-9 Unit Fund remain open will allow dog lovers to make ongoing donations,” Fred said. “Plus, as the Police Department needs money for a K-9 Unit replacement or care of the service dog, they may draw from those funds.”
