Posted by Rachel Jarvis on Thu, Jun 22, 2023

Sidney Long  The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Sidney  Long, a 2023 recipient of one of the 19 Doug and Renee Leuthold Scholarship awards,  one of the nine Glen and Alice Beers Scholarship awards, one of the two James E.  Huggins, Sr. and Margaret M. Huggins Agricultural Scholarship  awards, one of the  six L. Earl Smith Scholarship awards, one of the 19 Margaret and Donald Wenner,  MD Scholarship awards, and one of the four Robert Schwaderer Scholarship awards.

Sidney, the daughter of Michael Long and Andrea Long, is a 2016 graduate of  Buckeye Central High School. She will be entering her fourth year of a Doctorate  program in Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University this fall. What is your favorite aspect of college life?

"My favorite aspect of college is meeting new people with different backgrounds and experiences. There is so much to learn from the experiences of others, and I treasure the moments we can share our stories."

What new interest or courses of study have you discovered at college?

"There are many different facets of veterinary medicine that I have had the opportunity to explore and learn about. I have a new appreciation for surgery, and I really enjoy anesthesiology and internal medicine."

In what ways has the college experience changed/improved you?

"Veterinary school is challenging because of the volume of information students need to retain. This means many hours are spent studying after class, and time for family and friends can be difficult to balance. I have found in veterinary school that surrounding yourself with people that bring out the best in you and are supportive of your career is rejuvenating."

What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?

"My advice to an incoming freshman would be to have an open mind. Don't meet new experiences with a preset agenda and presumptions. Don't be afraid to ask questions when you don't understand and stay curious about the world in college."

What is one item on your bucket list?

"One item on my bucket list is to travel to every continent. I love to travel, and I enjoy learning about different cultures and ways of life."

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Sidney!
