The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Maxwell Phillips, a 2024 recipient of one of the nine Glen and Alice Beers Scholarship awards and one of the 20 Margaret and Donald Wenner, MD Scholarship awards.
Maxwell, the son of Daniel Phillips and Lisa Phillips, is a 2021 graduate of Buckeye Central High School. He is in his fourth year of a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science at Ohio Northern University.
What is your favorite aspect of college life and why?
"My favorite aspect of college life is the groups and clubs that I am a part of. A major reason why I chose Ohio Northern University is because of the sense of community I immediately felt from my first visit, which has only grown stronger throughout my time here."
What new interests or courses of study have you discovered at college?
"As a result of my college experience, I have discovered a passion for academic research after working with two of my professors. Thanks to this experience and the guidance of my mentors, I have decided that I will attend graduate school and pursue a Ph.D. in computer science. Then, I intend to advance cutting-edge technology through my work."
In what way has the college experience changed/improved you?
"Through my college experience, I have become more independent and confident in myself and my abilities. I have learned valuable lessons in leadership, teamwork, and communication, particularly from my extracurricular activities."
What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?
"Make sure to explore the options available at your college - from classes to professors to extracurricular activities. You never know where you could discover a passion or find new friends or mentors."
What is one item on your bucket list and why?
"I would like to attend an academic conference overseas. Attending one in the U.S. was a profound experience, and I believe there is much to be gained from seeing the perspective of a different culture, particularly regarding my fields of interest."
Congratulations and good luck in the future, Maxwell!
