2020 Scholarship Recipient Spotlight: Carsen Pirnstill

Posted by Amy Vaughn on Wed, Jul 22, 2020

The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Carsen Pirnstill, a 2020 recipient of one of the eighteen Margaret and Donald Wenner, MD Scholarship awards.

Pirnstill, CarsonCarson, the son of David Pirnstill and Rhonda Keefe, is a 2017 graduate of Bucyrus High School. He will be entering his second year of a bachelor’s degree in graphic design at Mount Vernon Nazarene University this fall.

What is your favorite aspect of college life?

“My favorite aspect of college life is the step toward independence that college has given me. Being able to be in control of every decision that will impact my future is something that prepares me for the real world, little by little.”

Would you say most of your learning comes from inside or outside of the classroom?

“For me personally, I tend to learn more outside the classroom. This is because, as a graphic design student, I am always on digital programs on my own time. Educating myself and advancing my familiarity with said programs is, for the most part, outside the classroom.”

What new interest or courses of study have you discovered at college?

“I’ve developed several interests of study while enrolled at school. I’ve found an interest in things like music theory, film, dark room photography, and digital art.”

In what ways has the college experience changed/improved you?

“College has completely transformed my sense of self. I’ve formed an identity; strengthened social, personal, and independence skills. I’ve become educated on social issues, the importance of politics, and my ability as a designer.”

What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?

“Don’t rush – take your time. The years fly by because they are so great. Find yourself, try new things, escape your comfort zone, and you’ll realize how happy you truly can be.”

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Carsen!
