2020 Scholarship Recipient Spotlight: Olivia Hocker

Posted by Amy Vaughn on Sat, Jul 04, 2020

The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Olivia Hocker, a 2020 recipient of one of the nine Glen and Alice Beers Scholarship awards.

Hocker, OliviaOlivia, the daughter of Allen and Heidi Hocker, is a 2019 graduate of Colonel Crawford High School. She will be studying middle grades education at Ashland University this fall.

What is your favorite aspect of college life?

“My favorite aspect of college is being able to find yourself. You become independent and are socially, mentally, and emotionally challenged throughout your college journey.  Becoming an adult is not always easy, but the relationships you create on your journey make it a lot more enjoyable.”

Would you say most of your learning comes from inside or outside of the classroom?

“I feel like both are equally distributed. I have learned independence, social responsibilities, and the importance of volunteering outside of the classroom.  I have learned educational based strategies, more information/resources for my major, and time management inside the classroom.”

What new interest or courses of study have you discovered at college?

“Being a future education major, I have taken multiple courses over the past year that reflect my major. Sitting and participating in these classes excite me ever more for my future of being a teacher.  Sitting in a class that supports your interests is a lot more inviting than sitting in a class that you are forced to take.”

In what ways has the college experience changed/improved you?

“My college experience has prepared me socially and intellectually. Personally, my self-esteem and self-awareness has dramatically increased.  These traits have allowed me to mature and develop into the adult I have always wanted to be. I have also gained independence. This has allowed me to grow mentally and socially.”

What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?

“Never be afraid to ask for help! This not only allows you to improve your understanding of a topic you are struggling with but it also allows you to build relationships with your professors. If they see that you are taking the initiative in your work and you are still struggling, they will be more willing to help you succeed.”

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Olivia!
