Johnson, CalebThe Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Caleb Johnson, a 2021 recipient of one of the 19 Doug and Renee Leuthold Scholarship awards and one of the 19 Margaret and Donald Wenner, MD Scholarship awards.

Caleb, the son of Travis and Heather Johnson, is a 2019 graduate of Bucyrus High School. He will be entering his third year of a bachelor’s degree in social work at Bowling Green State University this fall.

What is your favorite aspect of college life?

“My favorite aspect of college is the community. Going into college I was afraid of not having any friends. However, through different activities, classes, events, etc. I have met so many people and feel supported at BGSU.”

What new interest or courses of study have you discovered at college?

“I have found a lot of college courses that discuss new knowledge I was not aware of. These classes have perspectives that I did not grow up with. One major class was called Minority Groups in America, and that class was very interesting to me. I love taking classes that broaden my horizons.”

In what ways has the college experience changed/improved you?

“I feel like I have definitely grown as a person. College is a period of growth for a lot of people. We are all preparing for our careers, and we are being taught skills on how to enter the workforce and be adults. College has helped with strengthening my independence and helping me understand how to successfully live on my own.”

What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?

“Do not ignore your anxiety about making friends and adjusting to college. It may be scary at first, but make sure you go to opening weekend events for new students. You will meet so many people, and they give out so much information. These events are often a lot of fun, and it is how I met a lot of people. These events might seem scary. However, please go as it really helped me find friends.”

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Caleb!
