White, HannahThe Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Hannah White, a 2021 recipient of one of the two Dr. Joseph and Susan Shadeed Scholarship awards.

Hannah, the daughter of Gregory and Melanie White, is a 2018 graduate of Wynford High School. She will be entering her third year of a bachelor’s degree in business management and marketing at North Central State College this fall.

What is your favorite aspect of college life?

“By going to a state college, I do not really fit in the category of the college experience. By working two jobs, I have been fortunate enough to get through school without any debt. The reason why I chose North Central State College would be in an effort to get more flexible with the time that I do have, and because of the lower tuition rates. I am still getting the same college education, but with a cheaper price tag for the same piece of paper in the end. Working throughout college has prepared me most for what the real world will be like. The friends that you make in college will stick with you forever, and those friends will stick with you through thick and thin. I believe that my favorite aspect of college is the various forms and connections of friends that I have made through countless classes and other events.”

What new interest or courses of study have you discovered at college?

“Some new interests of mine would include growing my photography business as well as marketing myself in various careers to be better suited for my future and whatever lies ahead. From some of the classes that I've taken as requirements for my majors, I have learned that by being open-minded and more adventurous when it comes to certain topics, that I can better myself and my always evolving character. By discovering more about myself and my learning habits, I will consider that a new interest from the courses of study as I have taken while at college.”

In what ways has the college experience changed/improved you?

“College experience has changed my outlook on general education levels as well as work ethic standards. By working two jobs and going to school full-time, I have noticed where my low points are as well as when my plate is becoming too full at certain standpoints. When you have professors compare you to others in the areas of work ethic and stamina, they always rank me high, but these traits are achieved through discipline and hard work through my parents’ teachings. Overall the college experience that I have received has been via online for mostly all of my classes. I know how and how hard I need to practice in order to achieve my dreams.”

What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?

“Believing in yourself and setting a schedule would be the easiest advice that I could give to an incoming college freshman. By believing in yourself, you are setting yourself up for success. It is best to keep your mind positive in negative situations, and from there, you can learn, adapt, and overcome any obstacle that comes your way. When setting a schedule for your classes, you need to add time in for homework, studying, family time, and most importantly time for yourself. If you get caught up and are working so hard that you are neglecting your own health and your own emotional well-being, you are not being the best you. Another piece of advice I will give would be to never be afraid to ask for help, whether it's friends, family, coworkers, or bosses. They are there to help you even when you think they can't. Talking to someone is one of the best forms of medicine in which you can create a sense of understanding and agreement, from there, you can do whatever you set your mind to.”

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Hannah!
