Baker, KellyThe Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Kelly Baker, a 2021 recipient of one of the nine Glen and Alice Beers Scholarship awards.

Kelly, the daughter of Mark and Jenny Baker, is a 2015 graduate of Galion High School. She will be entering her fourth year of a doctorate program in veterinary medicine at The Ohio State University this fall.

What is your favorite aspect of college life?

“My favorite aspect of college life was gaining independence. With this new freedom I experienced, I also gained many new responsibilities that I did not have while living at home. My newly found independence and responsibilities ultimately lead to the development of time management skills that I still use today as a very busy veterinary student!”

What new interest or courses of study have you discovered at college?

“I’ve always had a goal through my undergraduate career to attend veterinary school, so initially my interests included sciences like biology and physiology. I also took an American Sign Language (ASL) course during my undergraduate career which turned out to be so much fun! While in veterinary school, certain specialties of veterinary medicine sparked my interest like surgery and small mammal exotics. I hope to continue to learn about these subjects as I move through my final year of veterinary school and into my early career as a veterinarian.”

In what ways has the college experience changed/improved you?

“My several years in college have shaped me into the adult I am today – I have learned so much academically but also acquired essential life skills. Additionally, my several years of college have brought me even closer to my family due to their unrelenting support and encouragement. I’m hoping to start my career close to home so I can continue to spend quality time with my family.”

What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?

“Take advantage of the credit hours that are included in your tuition to get the most out of what you are paying for. Enroll in some fun electives or other courses that are unrelated to your major while you have the chance! Also, be sure to make time to spend time with your family and friends that support you.”

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Kelly!
