2021 Scholarship Recipient Spotlight: Shelena Wilcox

Posted by Lisa Workman on Mon, Jul 19, 2021

Wilcox, ShelenaThe Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Shelena Wilcox, a 2021 recipient of one of the 19 Doug and Renee Leuthold Scholarship awards.

Shelena, the daughter of Danny Wilcox and Helena Patten, is a 2021 graduate of Galion High School. She will be attending Mount Vernon Nazarene University this fall and studying biology/pre-physical therapy.

What inspired you to choose your intended major?

“I was inspired to choose the major that I did for a number of reasons, the first being due to my own personal experience as a patient. Just as any child growing up, I was injury prone, which resulted in many visits to the ER and scheduling physical therapy appointments. After my first visit, my brain filled with questions about how the body worked and healed, as well as sparking a new form of interest in the medical field. Another reason I chose this major was because ever since I was a child I had always had the dream of being a doctor or in the medical field. I have always wanted to help people in their healing processes, and this field does exactly that, as well as it has a more social aspect to it as well.”

What are your career and life goals after you graduate?

“After I graduate from MVNU, I plan on entering a DPT program to further my education in this field. From there I can fully start my career as a physical therapist. I hope to find somewhere close to where I grew up as a way to contribute to the community that raised me and helped me in my educational career.”

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Shelena!
