Long, SidneyThe Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Sidney Long, a 2021 recipient of one of the nine Glen and Alice Beers Scholarship awards and one of the three Robert Schwaderer Scholarship awards.

Sidney, the daughter of Michael and Andrea Long, is a 2016 graduate of Buckeye Central High School. She will be entering her second year of a doctoral degree in veterinary medicine at The Ohio State University this fall.

What is your favorite aspect of college life?

“Interacting with diverse people with unique backgrounds is my favorite aspect of college. I have learned so much from different life stories from my friends, colleagues, professors, and mentors at Ohio State University. I have learned so much from these conversations, and I would never have had this opportunity without attending college.”

What new interest or courses of study have you discovered at college?

“While at Ohio State, I have had the opportunity to learn about various topics involving veterinary medicine and animal science. I think the most influential course I have had so far in my veterinary career is my clinical skills laboratory where I get to work with my classmates while learning new hands-on skills such as cattle and equine handling, small animal physical exams, and suturing techniques.”

In what ways has the college experience changed/improved you?

“College has shaped me into the person I am today. I have grown with empathy and compassion for people and animals, and I have learned that sometimes there are no perfect answers for the problems we are facing. College has solidified the fact that I will never work a day in my life if I love what I do. I continue to follow my journey in veterinary medicine with this mindset, and I let my career evolve around what I enjoy doing.”

What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?

“I would tell an incoming college freshman to explore the world through different organizations and groups of people. Venture outside of your close circle of friends and join a club that five years ago you never would have envisioned yourself joining. Stop and ask someone why they think a certain way if you don't understand how they came to a certain conclusion. Always be curious and never stop learning.”

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Sidney!
