Posted by Rachel Jarvis on Fri, Jul 15, 2022

Sidney Long The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Sidney  Long, a 2022 recipient of one of the 19 Doug and Renee Leuthold Scholarship  awards, one of the seven L. Earl Smith Scholarship awards, one of the 19  Margaret and Donald Wenner, MD Scholarship awards, and one of the three  Robert Schwaderer Scholarship awards

Sidney, the daughter of Michael and Andrea Long, is a 2016 graduate of  Buckeye Central High School. She will be entering her third year of a doctorate  program in Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University this fall.

What is your favorite aspect of college life?

“My favorite aspect of college is meeting new people and learning about the world through the eyes of others. I find new perspectives of the world to be fascinating and understanding how cultures have different priorities and values will help me as a veterinarian to understand my clients and work with them to find solutions.”

What new interest or courses of study have you discovered at college?

“I have developed an interest in internal medicine during my time in veterinary school. I find learning about organ systems and how they communicate to be fascinating. Understanding why diseases cause certain symptoms while other diseases do not is challenging and I can't wait to learn more in my last two years of veterinary school.”

In what ways has the college experience changed/improved you?

“The college experience has given me so much that I cannot put all of it into words. I have grown as a person through my mistakes and accomplishments in college. One of the biggest takeaways I learned in college is how to balance the highs and lows of life. I had to learn how to face adversity in situations where I had no prior knowledge to guide me. I am more mature and a better communicator after my time in college and I believe I am still becoming a better version of myself every day.”

What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?

“I would advise college freshman to go out into the world and shadow professionals while you are in college. Do not wait for your first exposure to the field to happen after college. Make sure you enjoy what you are signing up for and let what you enjoy doing guide your path through college.”

What is one item on your bucket list?

“One item on my bucket list is traveling to every continent. Embracing cultures and seeing the world are important to me.”

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Sidney!
