Maria Smith  The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Maria  Smith, a 2023 recipient of the Alyssa Pine Memorial Scholarship award and one  of the two Dr. Laurie Anne Rhodebeck Memorial Scholarship awards.

Maria, the daughter of Toby Smith and Amy Smith, is a 2023 graduate of  Colonel Crawford High School. She is attending Walsh University this fall and  studying Early Childhood Education.

What inspired you to choose your intended major?

“For the past two years, I have spent time mentoring at a kindergarten classroom at my school. I loved watching the students grow, and through this experience, I discovered my love for teaching. I wanted to choose a major that would set me up for a career where I could work with others and help positively impact my community.”

What are your career and life goals after you graduate?

“Upon college graduation, I hope to move back to Crawford County, get married, and start a family. I plan on using my degree to start a career as an elementary teacher. Throughout high school, I have been involved in the community through my church and other groups such as LEO Club, National Honor Society, and Junior Fair Board. These experiences have shaped me to be who I am today, and I hope through my experience at Walsh University, I can learn new skills to continue to impact my community when I return.”

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Maria!
