Posted by Rachel Jarvis on Thu, Jun 22, 2023

Maxwell Phillips  The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce  Maxwell Phillips, a 2023 recipient of one of the 19 Margaret and Donald  Wenner, MD Scholarship awards.

Maxwell, the son of Dan Phillips and Lisa Phillips, is a 2021 graduate of  Buckeye Central High School. He will be entering his third year of a Bachelor's  Degree in Computer Science at Ohio Northern University this fall.

What is your favorite aspect of college life?

"My favorite aspect of college life at Ohio Northern University is absolutely the ONU community. Even from my first visit, everyone from my admissions counselor to the professors was welcoming and genuinely passionate. I have made many great friends at ONU and developed great professional relationships with faculty."

What new interest or courses of study have you discovered at college?

"Thanks to a college course I took during my senior year of high school, I recently discovered my love for space and astronomy. I am now pursuing a minor in astronomy, I am a physics and astronomy tutor, and I performed research in astronomical imaging last summer with a professor here at ONU."

In what ways has the college experience changed/improved you?

"Overall, I have become far more confident in my own skills through my college experience. I've also gained many new skills and improved existing ones through my studies. Additionally, I have further developed my learning style using my personal management system, which allows me to retain and recall concepts more accurately than ever."

What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?

"I cannot stress enough the importance of taking detailed lecture notes. This was critical to my academic performance thus far. You might be able to remember everything in high school, but the pace of college is far too fast to rely on your memory alone. I would also advise incoming freshmen to do detailed research about their chosen college, especially if they are bringing in dual enrollment credits. Knowing how to navigate your college's courses and processes is essential."

What is one item on your bucket list?

"One of my highest priorities in life is to continue learning. I enjoy learning new things, and I believe it is important to keep growing as a person. I can't precisely cross that item off my bucket list per se, but I can keep filling the bucket."

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Maxwell!
