Melanie JohnsonThe Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Melanie Johnson, a 2023 recipient of one of the six Arlene H. Smith Scholarship awards and one of the three Kiwanis Kahle-Wenner Scholarship awards.

Melanie, the daughter of Matthew Johnson and Mellissa Johnson, is a 2023 graduate of Wynford High School. She is attending the University of Toledo this fall and studying Nursing.

What inspired you to choose your intended major?

"Many members of my family have careers in the medical field, but the one person who truly influenced why I wanted to be a nurse was my grandpa. Growing up, I watched my grandpa, who was a general practitioner. He was a respected pillar in our community and made people feel better and made a real difference. This is a big reason why I want to become a nurse. Nursing is also known to be the most honest profession. As a healthcare worker, you are entrusted with the privilege to take care of anyone who needs help no matter their circumstances. I believe in inclusion and am open-minded. I also have a caring and empathetic disposition that fits well with nursing."

What are your career and life goals after you graduate?

"After I graduate from the University of Toledo, I plan to come back to work for a few years in Crawford County and give back to my community. Then, I want to become a travel nurse. As a travel nurse, I will travel to different locations and work in hospitals that need more nurses. While traveling, I get to experience new places and learn many new skills that will help me build my education and career after school."

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Melanie!
