The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Adelyn Mayer, a 2024 recipient of one of the six Arlene H. Smith Scholarship awards.
Adelyn, the daughter of Timothy Mayer and Amy Mayer is a 2021 graduate of Shelby High School. She is in her fourth year of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing at Malone University.
What is your favorite aspect of college life and why?
"My favorite aspect of college life has been the friends I have made along the way. Nursing school and college, in general, can be very challenging. However, going through it with close friends and making memories along the way has been my most cherished aspect of this season."
What new interests or courses of study have you discovered at college?
"I chose nursing because I loved the anatomy of the human body, and I loved helping others- nursing is a profession that would let me do both. However, I didn't truly understand the complexities of the human body until I took pathophysiology. Learning about how the human body works and maintains its function has been so fascinating to me!"
In what way has the college experience changed/improved you?
"The college experience has changed me throughout these past three years. It has taught me how to ask questions, how to critically think, and how to work hard. College has made me a better student, but not only that, it's taught me how to make friends and how to be a friend."
What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?
"For incoming freshmen, I would advise them to make friends in their major. Having people to journey through all the classes with will make a world of difference."
What is one item on your bucket list and why?
"One thing I would love to see one day is some of the national parks. I've never been, and I think it would be a great experience."
