2024 Scholarship Recipient Spotlight: Gail Sparks

Posted by Rachel Jarvis on Sun, Jun 23, 2024

Gail SparksThe Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Gail Sparks, a 2024 recipient of one of the 19 Doug and Renee Leuthold Scholarship awards.

Gail, the child of John Darrel Sparks and Glinda Gail Sparks, is a 2024 graduate of Galion High School and Pioneer Career & Technology Center. They will be attending Otterbein University this fall and studying Theatre.

What inspired you to choose your intended major?

"Well, I did a musical, 'Newsies,' when I was twelve and just didn't stop. I love getting to know people while working to make something. I love acting, getting the chance to be someone else for a bit. Deciding which parts of yourself to put into them, and seeing which parts of them rub off on you. I love being backstage and finding solutions to near disaster. I love getting surprised with familiar faces because it's a small world, and the theatre in Ohio world is smaller, and more tight knit. I love every new thing I learn from it, from how to chasse to how to use a jigsaw. This is all a long way of saying I love theatre, and there are so many amazing people who do as well. So, I want to go to college, learn lots and get good, and hopefully be able to work professionally on or around a stage (or even film set), because if I have to be doing something for most of my life, I want it to be something that fills me with a love for life."

What are your career and life goals after you graduate?

"I want to find a job that I love and can support myself off of, like everyone else. I'd like to act professionally at least once. The absolute dream would be to become rich enough to be able to come back to Galion High School and finally build that dang auditorium."

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Gail!
