The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Maria Smith, a 2024 recipient of one of the two Dr. Laurie Anne Rhodebeck Memorial Scholarship awards and one of the nine Glen and Alice Beers Scholarship awards.
Maria, the daughter of Toby Smith and Amy Smith, is a 2023 graduate of Colonel Crawford High School. She is in her third year of a Bachelor's Degree in P-5 Education at Walsh University.
What is your favorite aspect of college life and why?
"My favorite aspect of college life is having the opportunity to meet so many new people who are from all over the country. I love hearing about other people's hometowns and learning about their own life experiences."
What new interests or courses of study have you discovered at college?
"Throughout my freshman year, I was required to take various courses such as philosophy and contemporary health that I would not normally take if they were not required. What at first seemed like a waste of time, only strengthened my love for learning and taught me the importance of getting out of my comfort zone and having a well-rounded education. I began to take the courses more seriously and began to see how they could even apply to education."
In what way has the college experience changed/improved you?
"The college experience has motivated me to take initiative in my faith. Walsh University has a great campus ministry program, and I have loved getting involved and have grown so much in this area of my life!"
What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?
"One piece of advice that I would give to incoming freshman is to be intentional about picking a roommate. It may not seem like a big deal over the summer, but it is important to remember that you will be living with that person for nine months."
What is one item on your bucket list and why?
"One item that is on my bucket list is to visit each of the national parks. I love nature and am always amazed with the beauty and variety that can be found throughout America. I hope that one day I will be able to see all of these sights."
Congratulations and good luck in the future, Maria!
