The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Addison Young, a 2025 recipient of one of the 20 Margaret and Donald Wenner, MD Scholarship awards.
Addison, the daughter of Neely Young and Alan Young, is a 2024 graduate of Bucyrus High School. She is in her second year of a Bachelor's Degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology at Kent State University.
What is your favorite aspect of college life and why?
"My favorite aspect of college life is how many new people I have gotten the chance to meet and grow friendships with. I have met some of my best friends in the classes I have taken so far, and it is so refreshing knowing that I will get to continue meeting such wonderful people throughout the rest of my college career."
What new interests or courses of study have you discovered at college?
"When I was still trying to figure out my major, I was originally in journalism. When taking classes for this major, I discovered how much I love the different types of journalism. We would take every two weeks practicing different types of reporting, and it was enjoyable being able to write my stories about whatever interested me. This is what caused me to continue journalism as a minor when I decided to switch to speech pathology."
In what way has the college experience changed/improved you?
"My first year at college has improved my communication skills and the way I view relationships so much. I have learned how to navigate different situations in a more mature way because of the classes that have taught me communication skills and the different people around me. I have learned how to realize that some situations are out of my control, and that I don't have to put my energy into things that are not going to benefit my future."
What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?
"I would tell incoming freshmen that at first, it is going to be so scary being around all new people, new places, and not really knowing what you want your future to look like. But the exciting part of college is getting to figure everything out. You will lose some people, and you will meet some of the best people you will ever know. Do not waste so much time stressing out about the future. Make sure you are soaking everything in as it is happening because before you know it, your freshman year of college will already be wrapping up."
What is one item on your bucket list and why?
"One of the biggest things on my bucket list is to get married and have kids. Having a family is so important to me, and I look forward to that future nearly every day. Having my own kids is pretty risky now that I have experienced having a stroke, so that makes my desire to eventually achieve that life even stronger."
Congratulations and good luck in the future, Addison!
