What is your favorite aspect of college life and why?
"My favorite aspect of college life is being able to hang out with my friends. I love the flexibility that I have in college when it comes to my class schedule. I do not have to be in classes from 8AM-3PM like I did in high school, which gives me more time to be with my friends. This does come with more self-discipline, as I have to make sure I am still studying and getting my work done even though I am not in class as long. I was very lucky to meet a lot of new friends during my first year of college, and I have continued to build relationships with them which makes college very enjoyable."
What new interests or courses of study have you discovered at college?
"I have discovered some new interests while being in college. I came in as just a Finance major; however, I am now pursuing a double minor in Risk Management & Insurance as well as Sports Administration. I have always loved sports, but I did not have any desire to study sports before coming to college. I now love taking the classes for my Sports Administration minor, as I get to learn about the different aspects of sports at the college and professional level. Insurance never sounded interesting to me until I had an internship at Ohio Mutual Insurance Group during the summer after my first year of college. This opened up the door to many different interests, which is why I decided I wanted to minor in it and learn more about the industry."
In what way has the college experience changed/improved you?
"College has changed me for the better. I am currently in my third year of college, and I have learned a lot since my first year. The biggest way college has changed me is by making me become an adult and be independent. I quickly had to learn how to cook meals for myself after I did not have a food pass through the university, and I had to supply myself with meals throughout the day. I also have had to learn how to create a school-life balance. This has made me a better person because after college, I will have to find a work-life balance that works best for me. College has allowed me to grow up in a way where I feel like I am ready to take on the real world after I graduate."
What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?
"Some advice that I would give to an incoming college freshman is to branch out and find new friends. Your closest friends currently in high school most likely will not be your closest friends in college. In college, you are going to meet so many new people, and your friend group will change as you grow up. It is okay to make new friends as you will quickly find out who wants to stay or be in your life, which is very important. I always tell the younger generation that you want to find the ones that want to be in your life and distance yourself from the ones that do not reach out first and are only there for you when you reach out to them. Lastly, if you are lucky enough to live in a traditional style dorm, do not hesitate to connect with the people living on the same floor as you. I made around 20 new friends freshman year just from my floor in my dorm, and that has made my college experience so much better than I anticipated."
What is one item on your bucket list and why?
"One item that is on my bucket list is to attend a World Cup game where Argentina is playing. I have always been a huge Lionel Messi fan, and I have always dreamed of watching him play for his country. When I was a kid, I always wanted to go to Argentina to see him play; however, now that he plays in the MLS in the United States, I was actually able to watch him play in real life. This crossed off part of wanting to see him play; however, I still wanted to watch him play for Argentina, but time is running out as he is at the end of his career. I would love to see Messi play in the World Cup, and I am currently looking to go to a game this upcoming World Cup as it is in the United States."
Congratulations and good luck in the future, Drew!
