The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Elizabeth Schubert, a 2025 recipient of one of the 20 Doug and Renee Leuthold Scholarship awards and one of the six L. Earl Smith Scholarship awards.
Elizabeth, the daughter of Marlene A. Schubert, is a 2024 graduate of Crestline High School. She is in her second year of a Bachelor's Degree in Zoology at Kent State University.
What is your favorite aspect of college life and why?
"My favorite aspect of college life is getting to meet new people from different backgrounds. In this past year of college, I have gone on a trip with multiple people from other countries and even attended classes with them. Being able to talk to others about their different cultures is so interesting, and often they will want to hear about ours as well. It has helped grow my view of the world and has broadened my horizons a lot."
What new interests or courses of study have you discovered at college?
"I have discovered my love of reading books while at college. At the start of college, I had more free time than expected while trying to find my set group of friends, so I decided to pick up reading novels by going to the local bookstore. This turned out to be a great decision, and I even made closer friends while talking about the books we all read and exchanging book recommendations."
In what way has the college experience changed/improved you?
"College has made me a more confident person. Being able to meet other people that share the same passions as me through clubs and my own major has really helped me to feel less alone. I am able to talk about my interests with those that share them and able to help work together to complete career goals in a larger group."
What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?
"It's fine to struggle with this new change! College is a new experience with more difficult courses, new people, and it's the first time being away from home for most. You are not alone: everyone else in your class is dealing with the exact same thing, so don't be afraid to reach out to get academic help or to talk to a peer about your struggles."
What is one item on your bucket list and why?
"One item on my bucket list is to travel abroad and volunteer. I would love to use my skills after college and veterinary school to help animals in areas that may not have access to veterinarians nor the ability to pay for them."
Congratulations and good luck in the future, Elizabeth!
