What inspired you to choose your intended major?

"I have always been very active in sports and, after breaking my ankle during a volleyball game, I was out for the season. I first saw this as a setback and very devastating as I was taken out of the game I love the most. However, breaking my ankle opened my eyes to the career field of physical therapy. I went through a lot of therapy to regain the strength in my ankle and during this time, I had an amazing physical therapist to help me. The therapist I had while in physical therapy inspired me to want to be a physical therapist and help others. I want to be able to help people and athletes recover just like my physical therapist did for me."

What are your career and life goals after you graduate?

"As a physical therapist, I want to create an environment that not only assists with regaining their strength and mobility, but also allows patients to take charge of their health and prevent future injuries. Additionally, I intend to stay updated with the latest research and techniques in the field to provide the best care possible. I believe that education plays a critical role in helping people understand the importance of physical health and the benefits of staying active. In pursuit of a physical therapy career, I have set several goals for myself. First, I want to obtain a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, which is essential for practicing in this field, while also completing my Bachelor's of Exercise Science. During my course of study, I plan to observe and assist in different clinical settings, such as hospitals and rehabilitation centers, to broaden my understanding and skills. After I obtain my DPT, I would like to specialize in an area like sports rehabilitation; where I can make a difference for athletes like my physical therapist did for me after breaking my ankle. I have always been passionate about sports and fitness, and I believe that helping people recover from injuries and enhancing their physical performance will greatly improve their quality of life. By achieving these goals, I expect to contribute positively to the health and wellbeing of my community."

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Gretchen!
