The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Adacyn Rister, a 2026 recipient of one of the 20 Margaret and Donald Wenner, MD Scholarship awards.
Adacyn, the daughter of Tonya Rister and Roy Rister, is a 2023 graduate of Bucyrus High School. She is attending The Ohio State University and studying Communication.
What is your favorite aspect of college life and why?
"My favorite aspect of college life has been the opportunity to meet people from all different backgrounds, states, and countries. Growing up in a small town, I wasn't exposed to as much diversity, so getting to know people with different cultures, experiences, and perspectives has been incredibly eye-opening. These friendships and conversations have helped me learn so much about the world beyond my hometown. College has broadened my perspective, taught me to appreciate different cultures, and allowed me to grow both personally and academically."
What new interests or courses of study have you discovered at college?
"One of the biggest interests I've discovered in college is media production and communications. While I learned about media production and social media in high school, my college courses have given me the opportunity to explore these subjects on a much deeper level. Using professional equipment, working alongside a television production, and gaining hands-on experience has been an incredible learning experience. These opportunities have strengthened my passion for the field and helped me build skills that I know will benefit me in my future career."
In what way has the college experience changed/improved you?
"College has changed me by teaching me that everything has a way of working out, even if it doesn't happen as quickly as I expect. It has shown me the importance of slowing down, being patient, and realizing that not everything needs to be accomplished in just a few minutes. I've learned to appreciate the present and enjoy the experiences happening around me instead of always focusing on what’s next. This mindset has helped me grow into a more confident, adaptable, and grateful person, both in college and in everyday life."
What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?
"My biggest piece of advice for an incoming college freshman is to step outside of your comfort zone. Expand your circle, introduce yourself to new people, and don't be afraid to start conversations with strangers. You never know who might become one of your closest friends. I also encourage students to sit with someone who looks like they could use a friend. Small acts of kindness can make a huge difference, especially during the first few weeks of college when everyone is adjusting. The connections you make by being open and welcoming can shape your entire college experience."
What is one item on your bucket list and why?
"One item at the top of my bucket list is going shark cage diving in Australia. I've wanted to do it since I was little because I’ve always been fascinated by the ocean. Another place I hope to visit someday is Tokyo, Japan. I would love to experience the culture, explore the city, and of course try authentic food."
Congratulations and good luck in the future, Adacyn!
