Posted by Rachel Jarvis on Sat, Oct 31, 2026

Elizabeth Schubert-1The Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Elizabeth Schubert, a 2026 recipient of one of the 20 Doug and Renee Leuthold Scholarship awards, one of the two James E. Huggins, Sr. and Margaret M. Huggins Agricultural Scholarship awards, and one of the six L. Earl Smith Scholarship awards.

Elizabeth, the daughter of Marlene Schubert, is a 2024 graduate of Crestline High School. She is attending Kent State University and studying Zoology/Pre-Vet.

What is your favorite aspect of college life and why?

"My favorite aspect of college life is meeting new people. This past year, I transferred colleges where I knew no one and so everyone I met was a new face. I got to know people of both similar backgrounds and those of completely different ones. This led to lots of discussions and often times new friends. The people I meet in various ways throughout the semesters even just in passing often end up coming back into my life at other points through shared classes or living in the dorms, and it makes college feel like a big family."

What new interests or courses of study have you discovered at college?

"One of the new courses of study/interests I discovered at college was chemistry. My major involves a great amount of chemistry, and while that was daunting, and I struggled at first, I have grown to enjoy it. The idea of how everything is made up of similar things when you get down to the molecular level is very interesting, and seeing how the combination of things can form unexpected new findings."

In what was has the college experience changed/improved you?

"My college experience has made me more happy and content with myself. I was always into learning and often times in high school, that can be a bit odd and against what my peers were saying. So coming into college with people that have the same goals and are often times even more into learning than I am has helped me feel accepted and thus helped me to accept myself more. The more I accept myself the happier I have noticed that I am, and how now even if something gets me down, I am able to get up again quicker and stronger than before."

What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?

"Don't be afraid of or feel stuck in a set path. College is full of new people, classes, and clubs where you will find new interests and maybe even decide to change colleges or majors. Don't let the fear of others' opinions or worry of new things get in the way of that. You are growing up, and growing up means changing and even deciding that the career you chose in high school may not be exactly what you want."

What is one item on your bucket list and why?

"I want to travel abroad. I want to be able to see how my future career in veterinary medicine is different and what other types of animals they treat in other countries. It would give me the chance to expand my horizons, meet new people and see the changes that I can make in this world."

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Elizabeth!
