Tricia GiesThe Community Foundation for Crawford County is pleased to introduce Tricia Gies, a 2026 recipient of one of the 20 Doug and Renee Leuthold Scholarship awards.

Tricia, the daughter of Linda K. Gies and R. David Gies, is a 1996 graduate of Yuba City High School. She is attending Cleveland State University and pursuing her Master's in Social Work.

What is your favorite aspect of college life and why?

"I have not had a traditional college journey. When I got my bachelors, I was a single mom. Now, in my mid to late 40's, I'm a single mom again. I do classes online. I do not have a college life. But I like doing the classes online because I can fit them into my schedule with work and family. The flexibility is vital. I would not be able to do in person classes, so the flexibility is my favorite."

What new interests or courses of study have you discovered at college?

"Through my classes and field work, I have discovered a passion for helping those who need to work through their trauma.  Trauma impacts a person in every way imaginable, and when I person is able to process it and come out the other side, it's amazing."

In what way has the college experience changed/improved you?

"I have learned I can handle a lot more than I thought and need less sleep than I thought. Working, field work, and classes, all requiring a full-time status is a lot. I may not do much else, but I am on the other half of it now and will be more educated and experienced when I'm done. I'm glad I went back and started over, even though I'm in my 40's."

What advice would you give an incoming college freshman?

"Being overwhelmed is okay, and normal.  Accept it, then breathe.  Write everything down regarding assignments and due dates. Stay organized with those, and don't be afraid to reach out to professors when you are confused or need help."

What is one item on your bucket list and why?

"That's a hard question. I don't really know. All I really want is a stable life and family and my children to be happy and healthy. I guess on my bucket list would be the ability to retire and travel. But since I'm starting a new career in my 40's, with a lot of student debt, I don't see that happening!"

Congratulations and good luck in the future, Tricia!
